Krak des Chevaliers shows exceptionally clearly how a major medieval fortress worked. The Hospitallers expanded it and the Mamluks later added to it, leaving inner and outer defensive lines, great hall and chapel areas, ramparts and views over routes between inland Syria and the Mediterranean. Together with Qal’at Salah El-Din it forms one UNESCO World Heritage property.
