Apamea was a major Seleucid and Roman city. Its monumental colonnaded avenue, historically about 1.8 kilometres long, gives the experience of walking a vast ancient urban axis across an open plateau above the Ghab and Orontes region. Damage, looting and access requirements are acknowledged transparently without reducing the site to them.
