Mezzeh, Damascus
Het uitgebreide artikel is beschikbaar in het Arabisch en Engels
Why it matters
Dihya al-Kalbi was a Companion associated with the Prophet’s diplomatic correspondence. His story is useful for understanding how the early Muslim community communicated beyond Arabia, and why the geography of Syria appears in accounts of the Prophet’s envoys. Sahih al-Bukhari 7 mentions Dihya in the transmission of the letter intended for Heraclius.
Historical context
The maqam attributed to him in the Mezzeh area is a local commemoration that needs to be distinguished from the evidence for his biography. A securely transmitted account of an embassy does not authenticate a later grave identification. Those two kinds of evidence should be explained separately.
Your visit
Use his biography to introduce the relationship between Arabia and Byzantine Syria. Any visit to the attributed maqam requires confirmation of the exact entrance and current access. The experience should centre on the person’s role and the history of communication, without adding invented relics or unverifiable details about a tomb.
Traditioneel toegeschreven graf
Wat de toeschrijving betekent
Traditioneel toegeschreven graf. Een maqam bewijst op zichzelf geen graf. Elke kaart maakt daarom onderscheid tussen documentatie en levende traditie.
